Soviet started the space era with Sputnik 1957. Yes I saw it in night time because big news then and times announced when passing. A big shock in the west.
Soviet also first with Laika 1957, Valentina 1963, Salyut 1971.
Pic below shows where our beach disappears. Salty sand makes concrete short lived.
